The Australian Open has become the focus of illegal gambling operators

Australia’s regulators are calling for tougher blocking of illegal sites”, — write: sport.ua

Offshore gambling operators are using the Australian Open to promote illegal services, raising concerns among regulators and industry officials.

Unlicensed sites host promotions and sweepstakes using tournament symbols and images of tennis stars, despite not having any official connection to the competition.

Australian authorities warn that such platforms are not subject to national consumer protection laws and do not guarantee payouts.

Responsible Wagering Australia CEO Kai Cantwell noted that such branding misleads users, creating the illusion of legality of offshore services. Regulator ACMA has already declared such sites illegal and initiated a blocking procedure, and is also investigating the promotion of offshore bets through influencers.

Since 2019, the ACMA has blocked more than 220 illegal gambling services. Consumer protection experts believe that a more effective measure would be to limit payments in favor of offshore operators, as implemented in a number of European countries.
