An international team of scientists, studying ancient single-celled organisms, has made a startling discovery that may shed light on this philosophical question.

Researchers have discovered that the single-celled organism Chromosphaera perkinsii, which lived more than a billion years ago, had an amazing ability: it could divide and develop like a multicellular organism, passing through stages that resemble the early embryonic stages of animal development. This means that the genetic mechanism necessary for the creation of eggs and the subsequent development of complex organisms existed long before the appearance of the first animals on Earth.
“This discovery allows us to look back more than a billion years and see how life began,” says one of the authors of the study.
In fact, scientists have discovered that “egg” appeared earlier “chickens”, but not in the sense we are used to understanding. The cellular processes that underlie the development of an egg and a complex organism originated much earlier, in simple single-celled creatures.
This discovery has enormous implications for our understanding of the origin of life and evolution. It shows that the fundamental mechanisms needed to create complex organisms arose much earlier than we thought.
