Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA Olha Stefanishyna reacted to the statements of congresswoman from the Republican Party Anna Paulina Luna regarding the alleged persecution of Christians in Ukraine.

Stefanishyna wrote about this on the X network.

Stefanishyna emphasized that the Embassy of Ukraine is always ready to provide information based on facts. She reminded that more than 30,000 religious organizations are registered in Ukraine, many of which cannot operate in Russia. According to her, claims of persecution come only from churches with ties to Moscow.

“From 2022 to 2025, 1,378 religious communities changed their canonical and organizational affiliation. This is their right. Some communities are divided, and these tensions are used by Russian propaganda,” Stefanishyna said.

She added that the activities of the Russian Church are a threat to Ukraine’s national security, as it publicly supports the war.

The ambassador also denied the statements of People’s Deputy Oleksandr Dubinskyi and his colleagues about the alleged presence of 42,000 political prisoners in Ukraine.

“There are about 34,600 prisoners in the entire Ukrainian penitentiary system. There are no political prisoners. Everyone has the opportunity to defend themselves in court,” she said.

Earlier, Anna Paulina Luna reported that she would contact the State Department after receiving a letter from Oleksandr Dubinsky, Artem Dmytruk, and Oleksandr Kunytsky, who accused the Ukrainian authorities of persecuting “priests, journalists, and peaceful activists.” The congresswoman also announced her intention to appeal to the Vatican to inform the international community about the alleged violation of the rights of Christians in Ukraine.

It is worth noting that Anna Paulina Luna previously met with the special representative of the Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Kirill Dmitriev, registered the draft law on the withdrawal of the US from NATO and voted against aid packages for Ukraine.
