It is impossible to talk about Ukraine’s quick accession to the EU, – Dick Schoff / UNIAN collage, photo ua.depositphotos.com, screenshotThe Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Dick Schoff, believes that at the moment it is impossible to talk about the quick accession of Ukraine to the European Union. The process of Ukraine becoming a member may take several years. Schoff said this during a speech at the Ukrainian Breakfast within the framework of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The Prime Minister of the Netherlands emphasized that regarding membership, there is no doubt that Ukraine should be in the European Union. But the path to membership is a balanced process.
According to him, although Ukraine is currently at war, it is “amazing what the country is doing in its own administration in order to rise to the threshold of the European Union.”
“We should welcome it and continue to support it. And then, in the end, there will be membership for Ukraine,” Schoff is convinced.
At the same time, he was asked about what time frame it is about.
“I think it’s very difficult. Because if you look at how we’re dealing with it now, it will take several years. We have to be honest about it. Because we don’t want to destabilize the European Union when a country joins it too quickly,” Shoof emphasized.
Accession of Ukraine to the EU – detailsAs UNIAN reported, earlier information was spread that Ukraine’s potential membership in the European Union could be part of a peace agreement to end the war. Such signals were even welcomed in the European Union.
Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Taras Kachka noted that the Ukrainian authorities are currently working with European partners according to the standard calendar, which provides for the completion of accession negotiations by the end of 2027 and actual accession to the EU by 2030.
Western media also wrote that the European Commission is developing a two-stage model for joining the European Union, which will allow Ukraine to gain EU membership much faster, albeit with some significant restrictions at the first stage.
