The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr explained in detail the position of the military command regarding the size of the army within the new peace plan. According to him, 800,000 servicemen are the “red line” that allows Ukraine not only to maintain its defense capability, but also to continue planned mobilization for rotations and replenishment of reserves without external restrictions.
In an interview with Channel 24 on December 29, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi explained that the initial proposals of partners to reduce the Armed Forces to 600,000 personnel were rejected as not guaranteeing security.
The current figure of 800,000 is considered optimal for peacetime after the end of the active phase of hostilities, as it:
-
Provides sufficient units to cover the borders and the contact line.
-
Allows maintaining an extensive logistics and maintenance system.
-
It makes it possible to conduct training of newly mobilized troops without violating international obligations regarding the number of regular troops.
The issue of troop withdrawal, especially in Donetsk region, remains one of the most difficult points of negotiations. The Commander-in-Chief emphasized that any decisions on redeployment will be made solely on the basis of military calculations and only after receiving firm security guarantees. The Chief of the General Staff directly participates in negotiations with the American side, which ensures that the strategic interests of the army are taken into account at every stage of the diplomatic process.
Earlier, Syrskyi stated that Russia is not ready to stop the war.
Syrskyi also discussed with Britain the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in weapons.
