The Ukrainian authorities welcome the statements of US President Donald Trump calling for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia and threats in the event of Moscow’s refusal to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation. Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiga stated this during the discussion “Ukraine: The Way Ahead” at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on January 23.

“It was a really strong message, a strong signal. We need to increase pressure on Russia, force Russia to negotiate, we need US leadership, we need greater US involvement,” said the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

He also added that it is necessary to increase the cost of aggression for Russia.

Another lever, Sybiga called the strengthening of Ukraine, which will stabilize the situation at the front and increase its defensive military capabilities.

“We are ready to do our part. So we really welcome such strong messages from President Trump, and we believe that he will emerge victorious, and we believe that we have an additional chance to achieve new momentum in diplomatic efforts to end this war and achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace.”

The day before, Donald Trump for the first time directly addressed the Russian leader Putin with a call to stop the war in Ukraine:

“With all of this in mind, I’m going to do Russia, whose economy is collapsing, and Putin a very big favor. Make an agreement now and stop this senseless war! Then it will be worse.”

Trump threatened to impose heavy taxes, tariffs and sanctions on all goods that go from the Russian Federation to the USA and other countries.

The spokesman for the leader of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, Dmytro Peskov, reacted to Trump’s de facto ultimatum, saying that he did not see “especially any new elements” in his statement.

The other day, the CNN channel, citing sources, reported that Trump instructed his aides to arrange a telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to them, the US president wants to talk to the Russian president in the first days after the inauguration to discuss a personal meeting. It is claimed that Trump is expected to quickly start work on the settlement of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

After the inauguration, US President Donald Trump said that he could talk to Putin in the near future, but did not give specific dates.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously said that Trump could play a decisive role in ending the war with Russia and help stop Putin.
