Sports history of the day. Japanese photographer working at Wimbledon, originally supports Ukraine

The Japanese photographer Arata Yamaok has been working at all the Great Hello tournaments for 15 years. In 2013, he filmed the World Gymnastics Championship at the Kiev Sports Palace. And representative international tennis tournaments in Kharkiv.

After a full-scale invasion of Arat, he decided to assist the press service of the Tennis Federation of Ukraine (FTU). For the fourth year, he has been sending FTU photos of Ukrainian tennis players for free. “It’s instead of Donates” Yamaok explains us. We write an interview with him in the Wimbledon media.

– Arata, on screensavers of your Facebook page You have a flag of Ukraine. How long have you been supporting our country?

– from 2017 or 2018. I understand Ukrainian a little, I know some words. I can try to talk, but it will be difficult to pick up words. Native language – Japanese, I speak English and Russian, I know a little French and Ukrainian.

– When did you start working at the world’s most prestigious tennis tournaments?

– I was always a freelancer. Once in Tokyo in the tournament he met the editor of a tennis magazine. It was in 2006. Since then, he began to ride tournaments. He initially traveled as a guest, started working in about 2008. He not only took pictures but also interviews. He gradually met Ukrainian players.

– Which of the Ukrainian tennis players did you most often shoot?

Sergiy Stakhovsky, Alexander Dolgopolov, Sisters Bondarenko. He visited Ukraine for the first time during the Tetra Cup International Tennis Tournament. It was about more than 10 years ago. He worked with Yuri Saproniv then, he was a vice -resident of the Tennis Federation of Ukraine and the organizer of the tournament. Initially cooperated with Saproniv – at the level of press services. But he is a businessman, and he later disappeared in interest in financing tennis projects.

But you have not disappeared in Ukraine, because for the fourth year you send a photo of Ukrainian players from the Great Helmet tournaments for FTU.

Now there is a war in Ukraine. I – A person is poor, I have no opportunity to get. I decided to help what I can and can. Before a full -scale invasion, I still cooperated with Ukrainian publications, such as “Today”, but it soon closed.

– Did not count how many of your photos were placed on its resources in 3.5 years of war?

– I didn’t count, but there were many. How much time is it ready to provide photos of the Ukrainian Federation for free? Let’s see. Technique, travel – Everything is constantly more expensive. But I know what is the situation in Ukraine, and just conscience does not allow me to raise a conversation about payment.

– What fee you usually take for such work? For one Grand Slam tournament?

– approximately 2000 euros.

– Do you work with Ukrainian players now?

– I work with sisters with sisters. I also give the yastrem photos. Eina Svitolina? It has its own management, they take photos from other resources. Usually, tennis agents do not really want to spend money on things such as a photo (laughs).

– How do you make money?

– I have a contract with an agency that works with players management. World news agencies have their professional photographers, so I do not work with them.

– Do you only take pictures or other sports?

– Not only tennis, but I specialize in it. Olympic Games? No, I didn’t work. The Olympiad is always a separate topic in sports. Just so you will not get there. In 2013, he filmed the World Gymnastics Championship in Kiev. In general, I take off any sports. If there are some sports events in Tokyo where I live, then I go and take pictures.

And I work on all tennis mayors. At least the last 15 years. I also work on qualifications. That is, I spend three weeks on the tournament.

-How many more in the world tennis are such friders, how are you? Who rides on all “big helmets”?

– Some 15 from different countries or even less. From Japan, except for me, another or two.

How is freelancers to the tournament? A new photographer can receive admission from the organizers?

The new will not be able to do it. Especially on Wimbledon. To get on Championship as a photographer, you need to have a certain reputation in the tour. If you were on other “helmets”, then there is a chance to get.

– What is your personal Grand Slam tournament rating by organization? Who is in the first place?

– Earlier, I liked Rolan Harros. But there is not easy too – The French have many different restrictions. Other “helmets” are all English, probably the Australian Open is the simplest. There is the most comfortable work. The greatest respect for journalists.

And here, on Wimbledon, how?

Here is a small court, there is little room for photographers. They generally need to rebuild the courts because they are very small. TV cameras are getting more and more, the places for photographers – Less.

– What about other organizational moments: food areas, storage of things?

Wimbledon, in principle, is not bad. The only one – There are more securities than other “helmets”. And now the weakest organization is Rolan Harros.
