More than a decade after the last installment of Starz‘s Spartacus series aired, the premium cable outlet is headed back to the arena.
The outlet released a teaser for Spartacus: House of Ashur on Wednesday, offering a brief glimpse at the follow-up series that centers on Nick Tarabay’s character, Ashur, from the original series. As for how Ashur — who died in the finale of Spartacus: Vengeance in 2012 — is alive in the new series, Starz explains it this way: “The series poses the question: what if Ashur, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance? And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion?”
The sliding-doors narrative, which Starz further says will “re-imagine possibilities and turns of fate from the original fan-favorite series,” also stars Graham McTavish (Outlander) as Korris, Ashur’s Doctore, and and Tenika Davis (Beacon 23) as Achillia, a gladiatrix. Watch the teaser below.
The nearly wordless teaser — Tarabay gets the only dialogue, saying “Begin” to his gladiators — also showcases the stylized action that was a hallmark of Spartacus during its original run from 2010-13.
Starz ordered the series in November 2023, with Steven S. DeKnight returning as writer and showrunner. Lionsgate Television produces House of Ashur, which is slated to premiere in the fall.
