Details: The request reportedly comes after a failed attempt to execute the warrant on Friday amid a standoff with presidential security guards, who formed a human chain to block investigators’ access to Yoon Suk Yeol.
The president is under investigation for sedition over his Dec. 3 martial law proposal that led to the first-ever court-issued arrest warrant for a sitting president.
The Office for the Investigation of High-Level Corruption, together with the police and the prosecutor’s office, is investigating allegations that the president organized a mutiny by imposing martial law.
What happened before: South Korean authorities were unable to arrest President Yoon Suk-yeol on Friday to execute a warrant for his arrest due to interference by the presidential security service with police and investigators.
Prehistory:
- South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol declared a state of emergency in the country on December 3. In a direct televised address to the nation, Yun said the measure was necessary to protect the country from “communist forces.” He did not name a specific threat from nuclear-armed North Korea and focused on his domestic political opponents.
- South Korea’s National Assembly voted on December 4 to demand President Yoon Seok-yeol lift martial law. After that, the president announced that martial law would be lifted in the country.
- The opposition Democratic Party of South Korea planned to accuse Yeol of treason and launch impeachment proceedings.
- In a December 7 address, South Korea’s president said he “sincerely regrets” having caused public concern by declaring martial law, promising not to do it again.
- According to the South Korean newspaper Yonhap, the court issued a warrant for the arrest of Yoon Seok-yeol, the president of South Korea, who was impeached.
