Details: The investigation established that Ptitsyn distributed malicious programs that were used to extort money, in particular from schools, hospitals and other organizations.

The US Department of Justice reported that Ptitsyn embezzled $16 million from the distribution of the Phobos ransomware.

A representative of the US Department of Justice, Nicole Argentieri, said that Pticyn and his accomplices had carried out more than a thousand targeted cyberattacks on the computer systems of private individuals and institutions in the US and abroad.

“Pticin and his accomplices hacked not only the networks of large corporations, but also the computer systems of schools, hospitals, and non-profit organizations. One of the federally recognized Indian tribes was among the victims,” Argentieri said.

The indictment alleges that starting in November 2020, Ptitsyn began offering access to the Phobos program to “affiliates,” which allowed them to encrypt victims’ data and demand a ransom in exchange for decryption keys.

Pticin is charged with wire fraud, conspiracy to commit computer fraud, malicious damage to protected computers and racketeering.
