Germany’s Defense Ministry said it was investigating the participation of German soldiers in competitions alongside the Russian and Belarusian military.
Germany issued a special permit for the landing of a Russian plane in Berlin / ua.depositphotos.comThe German military took part in joint sports competitions with the Russians in Bangladesh and posed together for a photo, writes BILD.As the publication reminds, Russian athletes are not allowed to participate in most international competitions, including the Olympic Games. However, the International Military Sports Association CISM (Conseil International du Sport Militaire) regularly organizes events in which Russian soldiers can participate – even in military uniform.
So, at the end of February 2024, the CISM organized archery competition took place in Bangladesh. At the award ceremony, eight Russian soldiers posed next to seven members of the German armed forces, including the head of the German delegation, Lt. Col. Christian Lützkendorf.
A representative of the Ministry of Defense told BILD that as soon as the photos became known, the ministry reacted immediately. It is reported that the soldiers of the Bundeswehr participating in the CISM competition have been informed that such photos are not acceptable.
“However, according to BILD’s investigation, Bundeswehr soldiers were photographed with Russian servicemen at two other CISM events even after the ‘unacceptable’ photos taken in February. These include the 79th CISM General Assembly in Tanzania in May and the CISM Basketball Championship in Serbia in June,” the publication notes.
Although there were no sports competitions between German and Russian soldiers at any of the events, there were joint “technical meetings” and “official dinners” with the participation of German and Russian officers.
The German Ministry of Defense, responding to BILD’s request, said that it had already started checking the participation of German soldiers in competitions together with the Russian and Belarusian military since the summer. If this is confirmed, the participation of the German military will be “in principle cancelled”.
Germany – other newsAs BILD wrote, Germany is not going to transfer any more large military equipment to Ukraine, except for the ones already announced. The German Ministry of Defense also does not believe that Ukraine will be able to launch a counteroffensive to liberate its territories in the near future.
UNIAN also reported that, according to the latest opinion poll, 45% of citizens in Germany believe that Ukraine should cede its territory in order to achieve peace with the Russian Federation.
