Literally from Reuters: “Seguro, who won support from leading conservatives after the first round amid concerns about what many see as Ventura’s populist and authoritarian tendencies, becomes the first socialist head of state in 20 years, replacing two-term conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.”

Direct speech Seguro: “The reaction shown today by the Portuguese people, their commitment to freedom, democracy and the future of our country, naturally moves me and fills me with pride for our nation.”

Details: A series of storms in recent days in Portugal failed to deter voters, and turnout was about the same as in the first round on January 18, even though several small municipalities were forced to postpone voting for a week due to flooding.

With 95% of the vote counted, Seguro won 66%. Ventura trailed by 34%, but still got a far better result than the 22.8% his Chega party got in last year’s general election.

What preceded: Voting began in Portugal on February 8 in a far-right presidential runoff election as deadly storms battered the country.

Prehistory:

  • Prime Minister Luiz Montenegrin said the storms had caused a “devastating crisis” but threats to the vote could be overcome.
  • In the last parliamentary election, Ventura’s Chega party campaigned aggressively against immigration.
  • According to the results of the last elections in May 2025, Chega became the second largest party in the Portuguese Parliament.
