The referendum is planned to make the following wording: “Do you support Slovenia’s expenses for defense up to 3% of GDP per year, which is approximately 2.1 billion euros, by 2030?”
When the vote takes place, it is still unknown: Slovenia’s Parliament must adopt a separate resolution on its holding. In addition, the results of a consultative referendum do not have a mandatory force.
Slovenia Prime Minister Robert Golob, whose movement “Freedom” voted against the proposal of colleagues in a coalition, then announced the initiation of the referendum “on Slovenia’s membership in NATO”.
“There are only two ways: either we stay in the Alliance and pay membership fees, or leave the Alliance. Everything else is a populist introduction of citizens by misleading,” Holob said.
Prehistory:
- In May, the Slovenian government approved an increase in defense costs to 3% of GDP by 2030.
- The decision of the NATO summit, where the target indicator of 5% of GDP was set, caused friction between members of the Slovenian coalition.
