The court of Vienna refused the representatives of the Russian Federation, who for many years demanded to evict the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company from the buildings in the center of the Austrian capital. This was announced by the General Director of the UDP, Dmytro Moskalenko. “We defended our right to use the building and did not cede the property to the Russian Federation, which we have the right to. The decision is truly historic, because the Russian Federation has never received a refusal. This is a loud slap to the Putin regime,” he wrote. Back in 1975, the Embassy of the USSR in Austria purchased a building and a plot of land in the center of Vienna. The money for the building and land was paid by the Danube Shipping Company, which used the purchased property in its activities. Currently, the plot and buildings located in the most expensive district of Vienna are valued at tens of millions of euros. In 2008, the Russians changed the owner of the building from the USSR to the Russian Federation. They argued that “allegedly, the ex-republics renounced the external obligations of the USSR, therefore Russia is the sole heir of the Soviet empire.” Even before the Great War, representatives of the UDP lost several instances. From 2022, a new team of the Ukrainian state company joined the fight for the property. According to the court decision, the property remains under the control of the UDP. “This is the first case when the European court has recognized Ukraine as a co-owner of foreign property, and there are thousands of such assets around. This case is the first step to win in relation to other real estate objects abroad, over which Ukraine continues to fight for the recognition of ownership,” – said Moskalenko. We will remind: PJSC “Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company” rejected the proposal of a Russian travel company to hand over the passenger fleet of shipping to it on a time charter basis.
