“To end the season here in Turin in front of the home stands is an amazing feeling. The last match of the year, emotions run high. Especially when you see your team, the whole box. I am really very happy.
Compare with last season? Fair? I don’t want to compare. Last year was incredible, this year too. I played in four Slam finals this year, won here, had a strong run at the end of the season – it’s amazing. But the main thing is that I feel that I have become a better player. This is the most important thing. I have always said: if you keep working and trying to grow, the results will come by themselves. This year everything was like that. Now we have a lot of time in the offseason to adjust the game and prepare for next year. The season turned out to be outstanding: many wins, few losses. And even in defeat, I looked for the positive and grew as a player. I think it worked. I am very satisfied.
What became the key? Played set ball, reverse break in the second set, these episodes were key. At the beginning, we both made a lot of mistakes – it’s normal when you play a final against such an opponent: you know what awaits you, and you get stuck somewhere. In the second set, the level increased: the rallies were longer, it became more difficult to interrupt Carlos. But in such matches everything is decided by little things – literally one or two moments.
If somewhere in the account 30:30 it was not possible to submit accurately. Or, let’s say, at 2:1 in the first set: if he broke at that moment, the game could have gone the other way very quickly. Here a lot depends on the angle from which you look. For example, the draw when I made a reverse break, I was just lucky there: the ball came off the racket, but hit the court. This also happens.
