Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, 329 Ukrainian media have stopped their work. Most of them were located in the currently occupied territories and in the frontline regions.
Such data is provided by the Institute of Mass Information up to 1,000 days after the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine.
Zaporizhzhia region is the leader in the number of closed media (50 media), Donetsk (35), Khersonska (34), Mykolaivska (30), Kharkivska (29), Luhansk (26) and Odesa (24).
As the IMI study showed, the full-scale Russian invasion led to the closure of the media in almost all regions of Ukraine, except for two – Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. However, the institute does not rule out that there are such cases that are still invisible to researchers).

The main reason for the closure of the media was the temporary occupation of the territories (117 closed media) and financial difficulties caused by the war (96).
Also among the reasons for the closure are intense hostilities that made it impossible for journalists to work, which was the reason for the closure of 82 media outlets.
At the same time, 29 media outlets noted that they closed for other reasons — the relocation of journalists, problems with distribution, the impossibility of working as before the war.
There are also media that have stopped working due to the mobilization of their chief editors or managers. These are two media each in the Mykolaiv and Chernivtsi regions and one each in the Kirovohrad and Cherkasy regions.
As for the types of media that have closed, television has suffered the biggest losses.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 105 TV channels have closed, which is 32% of all media outlets that have ceased their activities. In second place in terms of the number of closed resources is print media, 95 newspapers have disappeared (29%).
Also, as a result of the invasion of the Russian Federation, 77 radio stations were closed (23% of all closed media). Online media were the least affected: 52 news sites were closed, accounting for 16% of all closed media.
The leading regions where the media managed to resume their work are Kherson (14 media), Kharkivska (12) and Mykolayiv region (7). The restoration of media work took place mainly after the de-occupation of the territories captured by the Russian Federation, where the journalists returned.
