The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, criticized his colleagues from the EU for the fact that almost no one supported Viktor Orbán’s proposal for a “Christmas truce” at the meeting of the heads of diplomacy on December 16.

Details: According to Sijarto, the EU ignores the situation on the battlefield, where Russian troops have accelerated their advance, because they continue to promote the “current strategy” (he did not specify which one).
“They don’t even care that Christmas is approaching,” added the Hungarian minister, noting that none of the meeting participants, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, supported the idea of a “Christmas truce.”
According to Sijarto, some ministers supported the idea of a ceasefire in general, but others “clearly spoke against it”. Only the head of the Slovak Foreign Ministry expressed support for a diplomatic solution to the war, claims the Hungarian minister.
Sijarto explained the logic of the “truce” as follows: “If there are no hostilities, then there is no Russian offensive either.”
We will remind:
- Viktor Orban said on December 11 that Hungary offered Ukraine a Christmas ceasefire and a large-scale exchange of prisoners of war, but President Volodymyr Zelensky allegedly rejected the idea.
- Later, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó actually confirmed that this was not true, as Orbán had not spoken to Zelenskyi, and therefore could not have known that he had refused the Hungarian Prime Minister’s offer.
