Several music bands leave Spotify because of the founder’s investments in defense and support of Ukraine

The Australian rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard removed almost all its Spotify releases. The reason was the disagreement with the investment activity of the co-founder of the service Daniel ECA, whose fund Prima Materia invests in HelSing defense company, which specializes in the SI-technologies in the defense and produces shock drones, several thousand of which have already put in Ukraine. Pitchfork writes about it.

The band first hinted with Spotify, publishing the phrase “F*ck Spotify” while promoting a new derealization available exclusively on BandCamp. Later, on Instagram, they confirmed that they removed music through the connections of the platform with military technologies.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard joined Deerhoof and XIU XIU, which also declared their intention to go with Spotify for the same reasons. Unlike many performers, King Gizzard has the rights to their music and release it through their own Lieblace Flightless, Kglw and (P) Doom, so they were able to quickly remove most of the releases.

By the way, from Yandex music the band did not remove their songs.

The only entry remaining on the platform is the joint EP Satanic Slumber Party issued through Joyful Noise Recordings. The label stated that they would remove the release if the bands were asked.

Pryma materia, founded by Daniel Eccus, is actively investing in Helsing, which develops military with decisions. In 2025, the Foundation headed the next round of financing for 600 million euros for this company.
