About five million Ukrainians face a lack of food, and the worst situation is observed in frontline areas.
The UN (WFP) World Food Program (WFP).
According to WFP, millions of people are forced to resort to extreme measures – to reduce their own food for the sake of children or to borrow to buy the necessary products.
Despite humanitarian aid, more than half of the inhabitants of the Kherson region suffer from acute lack of food. In Zaporizhzhya and Donetsk regions, two of every five people are hungry.
WFP Director in Ukraine Richard Ragan stressed that humanitarian aid remains critical for millions of people.
According to the organization, 72% of those who receive food assistance are forced to reduce food costs, buy less nutritious foods, miss meals or borrow money to provide food for their families.
The situation in frontline areas is especially difficult because of the destroyed infrastructure and impaired logistics chains, which complicates the supply of products. In addition, the opportunities for earnings there remain extremely limited.
“Even in regions where stores continue to work and have the necessary products, many families cannot afford good food. Last year, prices for basic products have increased by 25%, and some vegetables have doubled, ”WFP said.
