“See who we’re dealing with?”: Zelenskyi on Putin’s statement regarding Oreshnik’s “duel” and air defense systems

Strengthening air defense was on the agenda of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s negotiations with the Secretary General of NATO and the leaders of the European Union, he said at a press conference in Brussels on December 19.

In the question, the journalist also mentioned the statements of EU officials who oppose “pushing” Ukraine to an immediate truce with Russia. In his answer, Zelensky said that he hopes for the unity of Europe and the United States after the inauguration of the US President Donald Trump:

“After that, we want to have a serious plan to stop Putin.”

He added that during the meetings “they also talked about air defense,” and later recalled the statement made by Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier today.

“Do you see who we are dealing with? Today, a “comrade from the Kremlin” said that Russia is proposing a technological duel. He says: we will hit somewhere in Kyiv with “Oreshnik”, and let them supply anti-aircraft defense and see what happens. Do you think that this is an adequate person? Just scumbags,” Zelensky commented.

At a press conference on December 19, in response to the skepticism of Western experts regarding Oreshnik, Putin proposed a “high-tech duel”:

“Let everyone gather (Western – ed.) air defense and missile defense systems, will choose an object – for example, in Kyiv, and we will hit Oreshnik and see what happens.”

On the evening of November 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the “successful test in combat conditions” of the latest Oreshnik medium-range missile. According to him, the forces of the Russian Federation struck the Dnieper with this ballistic missile with non-nuclear hypersonic equipment.

Putin said that this was “a response to the aggressive actions of NATO countries towards Russia” – the permission of Ukraine to strike with Western missiles on the territory of the Russian Federation and such strikes in the Bryansk and Kursk regions. He also did not rule out new such strikes.

The Russian leader also said that in the future, civilians will be informed about plans to use Oreshnik.
