‘It hurts your feelings, it f***ing sucks and he wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise,’ the actor, 55, told the audience at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio this weekend.
While he admitted the comments from the Oscar-winning filmmaker were a stinging rebuke, he suggested Tarantino was taking cheap pot shots at actors who couldn’t fight back.
He wouldn’t say that to somebody who’s a top-line actor in Hollywood … it’s humbling, and it hurts,’ Lillard said.’Whatever, who gives a s***,’ he added.
Lillard found fame in 1996 as one of the stars of Wes Craven’s blockbuster slasher film Scream and has worked steadily in films and television ever since.
However, he was name checked by Tarantino, along with actors Paul Dano and Owen Wilson, when the Inglorious Basterds director spoke about actors he didn’t care for during an appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast.
Lillard went on to admit, according to People, that while he’s “very popular in this room,” he’s “not very popular in Hollywood.”
“Two totally different microcosms, right?” he explained. “And so, you know, it’s humbling, and it hurts.”
An audience member then yelled out, ‘We love you’ prompting Lillard to smile and say, ‘Thank you.’
Lillard is currently starring in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which was released on December 2.
Next up, Lillard will be seen reprising his role as Stu in the seventh instalment of the Scream franchise, set to debut in theaters on February 27 next year.
He told People in September: ‘I’m nervous, because at this point in my life, the only thing I can do is sort of ruin how people consider Stu.’
‘I haven’t seen the movie yet,’ he admitted. ‘I don’t know if it works, but it’s a risk. And it’s a risk that I was excited to take.’
‘At the same time, I’m nervous to see the outcome. I hope people like it.’
The controversy was sparked after Tarantino revealed who he thinks is the worst actor in Hollywood.
Appearing on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast to reveal his twenty favorite movies, the Reservoir Dogs hitmaker explained that he wanted to rate the period drama There Will Be Blood higher than number five but couldn’t because of Paul Dano’s performance as twins Paul and Eli Sunday.
‘There Will Be Blood would stand a good chance at being no. 1 or 2 if it didn’t have a big, giant flaw in it… and the flaw is Paul Dano,’ Tarantino said on the podcast.
‘Obviously, it’s supposed to be a two-hander, but it’s also drastically obvious that it’s not a two-hander. [Dano] is weak sauce, man. He is the weak sister.’
Tarantino then piled on with two more names of actors he wasn’t partial toward: ‘I don’t care for Owen Wilson, I don’t care for Matthew Lillard.’
