German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he would like to visit US President-elect Donald Trump in Washington as soon as possible after his inauguration on January 20, DPA reported citing government sources, citing the Rheinische Post newspaper.
It is noted that the German chancellor said this during the first conversation with Trump after the Republican’s victory in the elections.
According to the interlocutors of the publication, Scholz “expressed a desire to visit him very soon after taking office.”
“It cannot be ruled out that such a visit may take place before the elections to the Bundestag on February 23,” they noted.
At the same time, it is noted that Scholz has not yet received an invitation to Trump’s swearing-in ceremony on January 20. However, according to his press secretary Carolina Levitt, the Republican unexpectedly invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to the ceremony. She added that the heads of state and government of other countries were also invited, without specifying the details.
It is reported that Scholz was “surprisingly positive” about his first phone conversation with Trump and made it clear that he believes in the possibility of a joint approach, in particular regarding Russian aggression against Ukraine.
