One of the popular formula publications has published a graphic with quotes from former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, who claimed that McLaren “favors” Lando Norris because he is British. The post appeared on November 4, and the repost from Piastri’s account was noticed a few days ago.
Since the repost button on Instagram is a relatively new feature, it’s possible that the pilot clicked it by accident. In addition, Piastri’s social networks are probably managed by a team of specialists. However, the action caused a significant uproar, and fans began to actively debate whether the Australian really supports this theory.
Soon the repost disappeared from Piastri’s profile.
The GPFans graphic quoted Ecclestone as saying to Sport.de:
“McLaren has a liking for the Englishman Norris. He has more star potential, marketing appeal and media coverage. It’s probably more profitable for them.”
Those words fueled a popular theory among fans that the team allegedly favors Norris, especially amid his battle with Piastre for the title. McLaren has repeatedly denied such assumptions.
Discussions first erupted after a stage in Italy, when the team decided to change the positions of Norris and Piastre after the Briton’s failed pit stop.
Norris has since moved into the championship lead and has a 24-point lead over Piastre with three stages to go. However, some fans still consider that moment to be a turning point and even booed Norris at some stages.
