RFE/RL’s “Schemes” project published satellite photos of the consequences of the Ukrainian military’s nighttime attack on an oil refinery in Russia. As can be seen in the images of Planet Labs for January 14, which are at the disposal of “Schemes”, Ukrainian drones hit at least one reservoir of the Saratov Oil Refinery. This refinery is located near the Engels strategic aviation base, where the Tu-95 and Tu-160 are located, which the Russian army regularly uses for shelling the territory of Ukraine. Earlier, Russian local authorities and the media announced the attack of Ukrainian drones on Kazan (Tatarstan) and Engels, Saratov region, in the morning of January 14. Since the beginning of 2024, Russian refineries have been regularly attacked by Ukrainian drones. At some plants, primary oil processing units failed and required repair. However, already in April of last year, Russia was able to partially restore the capacities of key oil refineries. According to the BBC’s calculations, published in August 2024, since the beginning of the year, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have attacked refineries and oil infrastructure in Russia at least 64 times. ”, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org
