Basil’s Day in Ukraine is celebrated January 1 according to the new church calendar. This day is celebrated Saint Basil the Greatand also welcome all men and boys with the name Vasyl. The holiday combines Christian traditions, folk customs and the warm atmosphere of the beginning of the new year.

History of Basil’s Day

The holiday is dedicated to memory Saint Basil the Great — one of the most prominent Christian theologians of the 4th century, Archbishop of Caesarea Cappadocia. He made a significant contribution to the development of theology, church organization and charity.

After the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the UGCC to the New Julian calendar Basil’s Day is officially celebrated on January 1which symbolically combined the church holiday with the beginning of the New Year.

Traditions and customs on St. Basil’s Day

In the Ukrainian tradition, St. Basil’s Day is considered a holiday of prosperity and good beginnings. It is with him that rites are connected, which should bring happiness for the whole year.

Main traditions:

  • sowing – boys and men sow grain in homes, wishing the owners well-being;

  • birthday greetings;

  • festive table and family gatherings;

  • it is a good sign if the first guest in the house is a man.

What not to do on January 1

According to folk beliefs, on St. Basil’s Day it is not recommended to:

  • to quarrel and wish evil;

  • refuse hospitality;

  • remove garbage from the house;

  • start the year with negative thoughts.

It is believed that the mood of this day determines the whole year.
