Rutte’s direct speech: “NATO exists not only to protect Europe and the US, but also to ensure security in the Indo-Pacific and transatlantic regions.”
Details: NATO’s Secretary General has reassured European allies who are expressing concerns about Donald Trump’s previous statements about Article 5 and the alliance’s responsibilities.
In comments to reporters, he noted that he had a very good working relationship with Trump during his premiership in the Netherlands and is confident that the US president-elect will act in defense of the United States and continue to support NATO’s role in global security.
Rutte emphasized that Trump understands the importance of US membership in NATO and that the Alliance is an important part of security not only for Europe, but also for the global stable order.
The Secretary General drew attention to current global threats related to Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. According to him, these countries actively cooperate with each other, which poses a direct threat to Europe, as well as to such countries as Japan, South Korea and the USA.
Rutte emphasized that North Korea is helping Russia in its military actions against Ukraine, and China and Iran are supplying Russia with technologies that strengthen its military potential.
“We are connected in this. The Indo-Pacific region and the Euro-Atlantic region are connected to each other. This is a global threat,” Rutte said, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation to ensure global security.
He also expressed hope for further cooperation with Trump, in particular during his return to the post of US president.
“I had a good phone conversation with him last week. We worked as friends when I was prime minister of the Netherlands and will do so again when he becomes the new president of the United States,” Rutte concluded.
Prehistory:
- In July, the former Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said that he has no doubt that the United States will remain a member of the Alliance if Donald Trump is likely to be elected as the new US president.
- While congratulating Trump on his election victory, Rutte said that “his (Trump’s) leadership will once again play a key role in keeping the Alliance strong.”
