AZAL plane crash – what you should knowIt will be recalled that the Embraer 190 plane crash of “Azerbaijan Airlines” (AZAL) occurred on December 25, 2024. It was on flight J2-8243 Baku-Grozny and crashed 3 km from Aktau in Kazakhstan.
At the beginning of 2025, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, blamed the incident on representatives of the Russian Federation. He also exposed the Russian authorities in attempts to hide the circumstances of the plane crash.
At a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Tajikistan in October, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin admitted that the cause of the tragedy could have been debris from two missiles fired by Russia’s air defense system. According to the head of the Kremlin, the missiles allegedly did not hit the plane, but exploded a few meters from it.
In addition, Putin shifted the blame for this incident to Ukraine. He stated that Russian air defense allegedly tried to shoot down Ukrainian drones, but an AZAL plane came under attack.
Reuters, citing a source in the Azerbaijani government, wrote that the plane was shot down by the Russian anti-aircraft missile system “Pantsir-S”. Journalists were told that a fragment of a Russian missile was recovered from the plane that crashed in Kazakhstan:
We will remind that 67 people were on board the plane. As a result of the disaster, 38 people died, and 29 people survived.
