The Yemeni recruits who came to Russia told the publication that they were promised high-paying jobs and even Russian citizenship. But when they arrived in the Russian Federation, they were forcibly drafted into the Russian army and sent to the front line in Ukraine.
According to analysts, few of the Houthis received training in Russia, despite the fact that Yemen is a poor country and well suited for recruiting mercenaries.
Among the Yemeni contracts seen by the FT is a company founded by prominent Houthi politician Abdulwali Abdo Hassan al-Jabri. In the registration documents, the company is listed as a tour operator and a retail supplier of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals.
Recruitment of mercenaries began in July. One of the contracts is dated July 3 and signed by the head of the contractor selection center in Nizhny Novgorod.
The publication contacted one of the mercenaries. He suggested he was part of a group of about 200 Yemenis who were drafted into the Russian army in September. The man said that he was lured to Russia by promises of profitable work in the field of “security” and “engineering”.
After several weeks at the front, he and four other newly arrived Yemenis hid in a forest in Ukraine. According to the mercenary, one of the men tried to commit suicide and was taken to the hospital.
