The diplomat calls on the West to prepare for a new threat scenario and to have no illusions about the Kremlin’s intentions.
Vadeful warned that the Russian Federation could threaten NATO after Ukraine / photo WikipediaAfter concluding a peace agreement with Ukraine, Russia may direct aggression against one of the NATO countries. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Johann Wadeful, in an interview with Die Zeit.
Against the background of negotiations regarding a possible ceasefire in Ukraine, the head of the German Foreign Ministry emphasized the need for real and strict security guarantees for Kyiv from the West, primarily the United States.
“This, of course, means commitment and real readiness on the part of those who promise to support Ukraine in the event of a second Russian invasion,” Vadeful said.
According to him, any discussions about possible territorial concessions on the part of Ukraine can take place only if there are reliable safeguards against new aggression on the part of Moscow. The minister also emphasized that European countries should be involved in the future security system, but specific mechanisms can be determined only after the conclusion of the ceasefire agreement.
Wadeful cautioned against excessive optimism, stressing that the Kremlin can use the pause in hostilities to quickly build up military power, already with an eye on the Alliance. The head of the German Foreign Ministry says:
“Our analysis is that security in Europe can only be ensured as security from Russia. It can only be achieved from a position of strength, unity in the alliance and defense capability of the armed forces.”
The diplomat refused to assess the probability of a scenario in which Russia would dare to attack NATO after the ceasefire in Ukraine, but called on the allies to prepare for such a development.
“I can only advise to be ready… If the Russian army achieves sustained military success in Ukraine, it will pose a serious threat to NATO,” the minister said.
Russia’s threat to NATOAs UNIAN reported, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that Russia and China could launch a coordinated attack on Europe and Taiwan.
When asked whether Europe would be able to fend off a Russian invasion on its own without US support, Rutte assured that Europeans “don’t have to worry about that.”
“Because we are an alliance, and because the United States strongly supports NATO. In addition, NATO has direct consequences for the security policy of the United States. A secure Europe means a secure America. Therefore, the United States has a direct interest from the security point of view in maintaining NATO membership,” the Secretary General assured.
