Russian political scientist Andriy Kortunov told Al Jazeera that Moscow prefers a diplomatic solution to the conflict, but is confident that time is on its side. Both sides are trying to convince the US that they are not an obstacle to peace, but Moscow believes that Ukraine’s position in the negotiations is unlikely to improve in the near future. “Of course, a diplomatic solution would be preferred here in Moscow … but the perception is that time is on Russia’s side, and therefore Ukraine’s negotiating position is unlikely to improve in the near future,” said Kortunov, who previously headed the Russian Council of International Affairs.
He added that Moscow expects to continue its gains on the battlefield if no deal is reached. At the same time, Kortunov sees some room for negotiations regarding the territories: Russia can retain several adjacent Ukrainian regions and offer small land exchanges. “In the end, there could be an exchange of territories – not a big one, but a small one that would allow both sides to claim victory,” he said.
Thus, Moscow maintains flexibility in diplomatic negotiations, while confidently counting on gradual control on the battlefield. Ukraine, on the other hand, remains in a difficult situation, when time and the military gains of the rival put pressure on its position at the negotiating table.
