Russia continues to threaten shipping in the Black Sea and undermine global food security by striking a Ukrainian ship carrying grain to Egypt that was in Romania’s economic zone at the time of the missile attack. Such actions of Russia received an adequate response from Ukraine.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell said this today in New York during a press conference following the informal meeting of the EU foreign ministers, which took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, reports the correspondent of Ukrinform.

“Russia continues to undermine world food security. We have been talking about food security for a long time, but these threats continue. A recent case – they (the Russians) struck a ship that was transporting Ukrainian grain to Egypt, in the Black Sea, in the economic zone of Romania, not in the territorial waters, but in the economic zone. This ship, on its way to Egypt, was hit by a Russian missile. Ukraine reacted to this situation in accordance with its own right to self-defense and Article 51 of the UN Charter,” said Josep Borrell.

The high representative of the EU called such behavior “very risky” and emphasized the need to provide Ukraine with further immediate assistance.

“Over the past few days, Ukrainians have destroyed important warehouses of Russian weapons, very deep in Russian territory, in some cases – at a distance of 500 kilometers from the border. And these were important successes for the Ukrainian army. The ability to detonate large warehouses of ammunition at a distance of 500 kilometers is a really significant military capability,” noted the senior EU representative.

As already reported by Ukrinform, the regular 79th session of the UN General Assembly is starting in New York. On September 22-23, before the start of high-level discussions, the Future Summit took place, at which the countries of the world agreed on the so-called Pact of the Future, which defines the main directions of reforming the UN and improving the efficiency of its work.

On September 24-28 and 30, traditional high-level general debates will take place. The theme of this year’s debate is “Leaving no one behind: working together for peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”
