Russia and Iran may sign a new strategic partnership agreement days before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. This was stated by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Esmail Baghai, writes Newsweek.
The American magazine reports that the new agreement, which may be signed between the countries, shows an attempt by Iran and Russia to join forces against the backdrop of growing isolation in the world.
The article says that, according to the message of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the agreement with Iran has been under development for many years. According to the head of the Russian ministry, Sergey Lavrov, the agreement will be ready for signing in the near future, and it will be able “to formalize the parties’ commitment to close defense cooperation and interaction in the interests of regional and global peace and security.” He said this at the end of October, a few days after Russian dictator Vladimir Putin met with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian at the BRICS summit in Kazan, writes Newsweek.

The article notes that the new agreement between Iran and Russia will replace the 20-year strategic agreement that the countries signed in 2002 and extended in 2020.
According to the Iranian state news agency Mehr, the agreement will include promises of cooperation in the fields of energy, production, transport and agriculture.
Deepening cooperation between the Russian Federation and Iran destabilizes not only the Middle East, but also the whole world — State Department
In October, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that deepening cooperation between Russia and Iran in various fields affects not only the situation in the Middle East, but also the general level of security in the world.
“Certainly, we view the deepening of ties between Iran and Russia as something incredibly destabilizing for the region. It’s incredibly destabilizing to the world, and that includes the Middle East. This applies wherever Iran and Russia are active,” said the State Department spokesman.
