Tomak noted that Romania officially declared its readiness to discuss the issue of unification with Moldova as early as March 27, 2018, having adopted the corresponding statement without a single vote “against” in the parliament. He emphasized that this is the official position of the Romanian state, and it has not changed.
“Romania is ready at any moment to sit down at the negotiating table and seriously discuss this scenario, only if the Republic of Moldova considers it as an option,” said the adviser to the Romanian president.
He emphasized that the common goal of both Bucharest and Chisinau is to support by all means the acceleration of the European integration process of Moldova.
When asked whether Romania is ready for the unification scenario, including from the point of view of the necessary support from EU partners, NATO allies and the strategic partner of the USA, Tomak states that “all our partners know that the same people live in Romania and in the Republic of Moldova”, calling for this discussion to be conducted in “extremely responsible and serious tones”.
In an interview with the German press last year, on the eve of his visit to Berlin, the President of Romania, Nikušor Dan, said that “I personally want unification with Moldova”, but as long as the citizens of the neighboring country support the current form of the state, “Romania will not do anything”.
The August survey showed that the absolute majority of Moldovans oppose unification of the country with Romania, while a third support this idea.
In past years, polls also showed that the majority of Romanians – against unification with Moldova.
