In Ivano-Frankivsk, residents of one of the city’s buildings categorically opposed the installation of a ramp in the entrance for a child with disabilities, citing the fact that it “spoils the aesthetic appearance”, is “too long” and “bulky”. Deputy Mayor Mykhailo Smushak called the situation “a test of humanity” for the entire city and said that the ramp will be installed, as it is a basic right of the child.

This was reported by Mykhailo Smushak on Facebook.

The deputy mayor held a meeting with the family that needs the ramp and residents who oppose it. Residents of the building, built in 1971, are demanding that the ramp be shortened or replaced with an electric lift, arguing that it can impede traffic, block access to utilities and rescue equipment.

  • Position of the authorities: Mykhailo Smushak emphasized that the residents’ demands contradict the legislation: “The ramp is not a whim or someone’s whim. It doesn’t have to be pretty, it has to be functional. This is a mandatory element of accessibility, defined by the state building regulations of Ukraine.”

  • Refusal of the lift: The deputy explained that an electric lift cannot be the main means of access, as it depends on the electricity and technical condition, and the State Building Regulations (DBN) allow such devices only as additional ones.

The planned ramp will have a length of 6 m, and the platform itself – 60 cm, which meets the necessary standards.

Smushak stressed that he would not name the names of the opponents, but noted: “Today in our city, we have a situation where adults do everything to prevent a child with disabilities from leaving their own home. This is a test of humanity for our entire city. Because the right to leave the house is not a luxury. This is the basic right of every human being.”

Previously in the Kyiv City Hall promised to buy until the end 50 new trolleybuses with wheelchair ramps.

In Kharkiv, on the second attempt, a ramp was installed near the house of Ukrainian Paralympic athlete Anna Pashkova. The first broke through scandalous neighbors .
