Details: Thune, 63, won a runoff election for Senate Republican leader with 29 votes to 24 for John Cornyn of Texas.
Florida Sen. Rick Scott, favored by Donald Trump supporters — including former Fox News host Tucker Carlson — was eliminated in the first round by just 13 votes.
John Thune has served in the Senate since 2004, and until recently was deputy to outgoing Republican leader Mitch McConnell. Thune is considered an experienced lawmaker who takes more centrist positions and has a strong relationship with most of his Republican colleagues in Congress.
It is already known that the Republican leader in the Senate will lead a majority of at least 52 lawmakersand.
In his previous statements, Tun actively spoke in support of Ukraine. In March, when discussions continued on the adoption of a multibillion-dollar aid package for Kyiv, he stated that “America cannot remove itself from the world arena.”
