The 55-year-old Texan was wearing an ‘incredible’ strapless red Carolina Herrera dress with tulle trimming, and as she left the ceremony a ‘gentleman stepped on the train.’
‘I kept walking in the other direction and it ripped it right off my dress from right beneath my booty,’ Renée recalled to British Vogue on Wednesday.
‘There were parties and things afterwards, but I needed to go home and do a little bit of a costume change.’
But when Zellweger got home, she realized she hadn’t brought her house key.
‘So I had to climb up the balcony to the second floor and climb in through a little bathroom window in that dress with the hole under my booty,’ the two-time Oscar winner laughed.
When it came to her first Oscar ceremony in 1999, Renée wore designer L’Wren Scott’s first-ever dress, telling the mag: ‘I believe there was a tall boy can of Budweiser and a bag of Doritos that went into the preparation for this look.’
As part of her ‘Life in Looks’ segment, Zellweger also remembered how costume designer Betsy Heimann made the little black dress she donned in Cameron Crowe’s 1996 sporty rom-com Jerry Maguire.
‘That was an incredible time,’ the Big Picture Company co-founder gushed.
‘I think Cameron wanted something that was a little bit classic and a wink back to the old Shirley MacLaine movies that inspired the character [Dorothy Boyd].’
Renée famously gained 30lbs to take on the titular role in Sharon Maguire’s 2001 rom-com Bridget Jones’s Diary, in which the hapless character decided to wear a Playboy Bunny costume.
‘Oh, Bridget,’ Zellweger sighed.
‘Goodness, that costume. Oh, [it] made me laugh out loud.’
The Thing About Pam producer-star then dished: ‘I heard some rumor that Hugh Grant kept the pants, the big pants, but I don’t know if that’s true. We’ll have to ask him!’
Renée also discussed the costumes she wore for her acting debut in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nurse Betty, Chicago, Judy, as well as her first Vogue cover.

‘It’s such an unusual experience to be able to revisit a character in different stages of her life,’ the girlfriend of Ant Anstead marveled.
The May-December rom-com also features Leo Woodall, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Isla Fisher, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, Shirley Henderson, and James Callis.
The prior trilogy amassed a combined $756.4M at the global box office.
Renée was previously attached to produce and star in Peacock’s WWII Air Force series Avenger Field as well as star in Michael Patrick King’s revenge flick The Back Nine, but it’s unclear if either project is moving forward.
