Researchers have made a breakthrough in the field of smart windows by developing a technology that allows you to control both visible light and infrared radiation at the same time.

This discovery promises to make a breakthrough in the construction of energy-efficient buildings, providing an optimal balance between comfort and energy savings.
A new study published in the Journal of Photonics for Energy describes an innovative approach combining liquid crystals and nanoporous microparticles. Thanks to this combination, it was possible to create a thin device that can quickly change its transparency depending on external conditions.
To further increase efficiency, the scientists integrated the surface of a metamaterial made of vanadium dioxide into the system. This layer helps align the liquid crystals and increases the window’s ability to block infrared radiation.

“Overall, the hybrid device represents a significant advance in smart window technology,” says study author Professor Ibrahim Abdulhalim.
However, commercial application of the new technology requires additional research. Scientists plan to optimize the properties of vanadium dioxide and develop a more efficient design of the device.
