The analyst noted that the additional involvement of new recruits in the Russian army will “load up” the budget of the Russian Federation.
Benjamin Hilgenstock, a senior economist at the Kyiv School of Economics, told Business Insider that “an additional 180,000 people out of the labor force will have a serious impact on the economy.” According to Artem Kochev, an economist at the Vienna Institute of International Economic Studies, the Russian labor market will suffer less if conscription into the army is carried out purposefully. The analyst also described the “portrait” of the new occupier.
“Currently, new recruits can be divided into two groups: people who are in debt, with a low socio-economic status, and convicts,” he said. The interlocutor emphasized that they are either employed in less productive sectors of the economy or do not participate in the labor market at all.
“As long as recruitment remains within these two groups, the impact on the labor market will be limited,” the expert added. Kochev noted that the additional recruitment of recruits to the Russian Armed Forces will still be a new burden on the budget.
According to media reports, so many prisoners were recruited into the army in Russia that some prisons began to be closed. Back in March, the Russian Federation declared that due to a simultaneous significant reduction in the number of convicts, some places of restraint of will were “covered up”.
Important news – Russia in the spotlightIn September, Vladimir Putin ordered an increase in the size of the Russian army by 180,000. The dictator’s decree will come into effect in December. Thus, the total number of military personnel of the Russian Federation should reach 2.38 million people, of which 1.5 million are active soldiers.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that the Russian leader has increased the size of the Russian Armed Forces after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine (which took place on February 24, 2022). In August 2022, the dictator ordered to “inflate” the number of the Russian military by 137,000, and in December 2023 – by 170,000.
Military expert, pilot-instructor, colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in reserve, Roman Svitan, believes that the new decision of the Russian leader to increase the number of soldiers in the Russian army will not affect the situation at the front in our country.
