Most likely, according to exit polls, in the second round he will compete with Elena Lasconi, the leader of the “Union of the Rescue of Romania” party, which received 18% of the vote.
Representative of the right George Simion previously won 15% of the vote.
If none of the candidates receives more than 50% of the votes, then on December 8, the second round of presidential elections will be held, in which the two candidates who will receive the largest number of votes will take part.
Parliamentary elections will also be held in Romania on December 8.
13 candidates are running for the post of head of state. At the same time, there are 14 surnames on the ballots – the candidate from the National Liberal Party, Ludovic Orban, refused to participate in the elections at the last moment, but his surname did not have time to be removed from the ballots.
According to the results of pre-election polls, the current Prime Minister of Romania and the head of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Marcel Colacu, is the most popular. His closest competitor is George Simion, a representative of the right. He adheres to nationalist views. In an interview with the European media, he called Italian Prime Minister George Maloney and US President-elect Donald Trump his idols. Moldova and Ukraine declared Simion persona non grata and banned him from entering their territories.
In addition to Čolak and Simion, the head of the “Salvation Union of Romania” party Yelena Lasconi, the former Deputy Secretary General of NATO Mircea Joane, the former Minister of Defense General Nicolae Čuke and other politicians are running for the position of president.
Of Romania’s more than 19 million citizens who have the right to vote, almost a million live abroad. The majority of Romanians who have the right to vote abroad live in Moldova, Germany, Italy, Spain and the USA. Voting abroad began already on November 22, and by Sunday morning, more than 222,000 voters had already voted there.
