On the morning of Wednesday, May 7, the Vatican launched a competition, the purpose of which is to elect a new, 267th, Pope. 133 cardinals from 70 countries (including Cardinal Mykola Bychok from Ukraine) are attended by voting, who will determine the successor of Pope Francis, who died last month. The rule of two thirds of votes The pope candidate must receive two -thirds of the vote (plus one if the number of voters is not divided into three). If after several tours of consensus voting is not reached, the conquever can pause for prayer and reflection. Since 1996 (according to Universi Dominici Gregis, John Paul II) after 33 rounds, cardinals can go to a simple majority, although it has never been used.

Sykstine Chapel as a Voting Place The Sykstin Chapel has become the main place of conducting of contours since 1878 because of its safety and symbolic significance. Insulation with thick walls and the splendor of the chapel make it ideal for the secrecy and celebration of the conclave. Michelangelo murals, including the “Last Judgment”, stand over the cardinal during the vote.
Before each chapel is checked for tracking devices, and a special stove used since 1939 burns the ballots, making the famous smoke.
Smoke signals (black and white smoke) This tradition signals the world about the course of the conclave. Black smoke (Fumata Nera), which is formed during burning of ballots with damp straw or chemicals, indicates that the pope is not selected. White smoke (Fumata Bianca), which is obtained using dry straw or chemicals, reports the new pope. Smoke leaves the pipe above the Sistine Chapel. It is a favorite public ritual, which is followed by crowds on St. Peter’s Square and the whole world through the media.
In 1958, there was a confusion when the smoke surrendered gray, which led to false reports of the new Pope. Now chemical additives provide clearer colors. And since 2005, St. Peter’s Cathedral has been ringing with white smoke to avoid confusion.
Habemus Papam ads! After the Pope is elected, the cardinal-diacon goes to the balcony of St. Peter’s Cathedral and announces: Habemus Papam! (“We have a pope!”) By presenting a new pontiff by his new name and title. Then the pope blesses the crowd. It is the climax of the concala and the moment of global attention.
In 2005, Benedict XVI’s announcement was postponed due to technical problems with the microphone, which caused a stressful expectation in the crowd.

How does the Pope choose a name? The new Pope chooses a name that becomes his official title at the time of the pontific. It can symbolize reverence to predecessors or saints. For example, Pope John Paul II (1978–2005) chose a name in honor of the pontiffs of John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul I, emphasizing the continuity. Pope Benedict XVI (2005–2013) chose a name in honor of Benedict XV and St. Benedict of Nurski, emphasizing peace and monastic tradition. Pope Francis (2013–2025) chose a name in honor of St. Francis Assisi, giving devotion to the simplicity and care of the poor.
The name may display the Pope’s intentions. For example, Pope Pius IX (1846–1878) chose the name “Pius” associated with a conservative tradition, signaling his position against liberal reforms.
“Fisherman’s Ring” and “Tears Room” Fisherio Ring – a gold ring with the image of St. Peter in a boat, which is handed over after his election. Each dad receives a unique ring that is destroyed after his death or renunciation. The ring symbolizes the power of the Pope as the successor of Peter, “fishermen of the soul.” After the renunciation of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013, his ring was not destroyed but mark Cross to prevent use.
After election in the Sistine chapel, the pope goes to the “Sacrestia Lacrimatoria) – a small room near the chapel where he first puts on papal clothes. The name of the room is associated with the emotions that the new Pope feels, aware of the gravity of his mission. What do the colors and elements of papal clothing mean? After his election, the new Pope is dressed in special clothing, which symbolizes his spiritual and administrative authority, as well as connection with the tradition and mission of the church.
He puts on a white linen or wool, which becomes his main outfit. It is sewn in advance in several sizes (usually three variants: small, medium, large) Vatican tailor – for example, the Gammaralli family, the official tailors of the popes since 1798, and is adjusted immediately after election.
White symbolizes purity, holiness and spiritual revival. The tradition of the White Suman echoes the Dominican Order, whose member, Pius V (1566–1572), preserved the white outfit of the Order after election, making it a standard for the popes.
Also, the Pope wears Mozzetta – short, to the waist, a hooded cloak, which is worn over Sutana. After election, the pope may wear a red velvet mozzhet with ermine treatment (winter) or red silk (summer). Red symbolizes the martyrdom and the readiness of the Pope to suffer for faith, as well as his connection with a cardinal. Eornostay emphasizes papal authority and tradition.
Then there is a cape – a small cloak on the shoulder, attached to the snot, also white. Peller enhances the symbolism of purity and distinguishes the papal sign from the usual priesthood.
The pector of the cross is worn on a lace or chain on the chest. After election, the Pope can choose a new cross or keep his former, as Francis did. The cross symbolizes the faith, the sacrifice of Christ and the pastoral mission of the Pope. The simplicity of the cross, such as silver or wooden, may reflect the personal beliefs of the Pope.
On the head of the pope – a turtle (zucchetto), a small round hat. The papal skull is white unlike the red cardinal or purple bishop. The white skull symbolizes spiritual power and purity of thoughts. It is also associated with the tradition of covering the head in respect for God. After the election of 1978, Pope John Paul II turned out to be non -standard, and the tailor had to hurry up his skull.
Pallium is a narrow strip of fabric with black crosses dressed on the shoulders. The new Pope receives Palley later during the inaugural mass. Palley symbolizes pastoral responsibility and connection with the Apostle Peter, the first pope. Black crosses are reminiscent of Christ’s suffering.
As for the shoes, traditionally, the Pope wore red leather shoes that symbolize the blood of martyrs, and only Pope Francis preferred black shoes that he worn before his election. Shoes are usually handmade.
