The head of the Polish Ministry of Culture Anna Vrublevskaya has announced that exhumation work in the territory of the former village of Zboyskaya, which is now part of Lviv, may start in the second half of this year.
She reported this during a press conference, stressed that the relevant permission to carry out the work was received by the Institute of National Memory of Poland.
It is this institution, in close cooperation with the Ukrainian side, that develops a detailed plan of action for exhumation at the burial place of the dead Polish servicemen in 1939.
According to Vrublevskaya, the Polish side has already received a second permission to carry out exhumation works in Ukraine – this was made possible by constructive dialogue between the two countries. Ukraine, in turn, has received a similar permission to search in the village of Yurechkova.
In both cases, decisions were made in response to the appeals of citizens who seek to find the remains of their relatives, killed during the tragic events of the last century.
In addition, the Minister informed that the Freedom and Democracy Foundation is preparing a new application for exhumation works in the former village of Puzhniki in Ternopil region.
Polish researchers have already worked in this territory, but it is believed that there may be more remains than found during previous excavations.
Exhumation work in the dusaders, which lasted in April-May 2025, was conducted by a joint Polish-Ukrainian group of experts: consisting of anthropologists, genetics, archaeologists, forensic experts from both countries.
The result was found fragments of skeletons of at least 42 people, including women, men and children. Laboratory studies are now underway to identify the victims, and after the end of this work, the remains are buried in the local cemetery according to the will of the families.
The Polish side called the process of finding and exhumation a historical and diplomatic breakthrough, and Ukrainian officials emphasized that all the work is happening in close cooperation and in compliance with agreements, without politicizing the process.
The Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine Mykola Tochitsky refuted the rumors of the alleged recall of exhumation permission, emphasizing the dedication of both countries with democratic values and decent honoring the memory of the victims.
We will remind, the exhumation of victims of the Volyn tragedy in Ukraine began in April. The works will begin with Ternopil region.
We have also reported that the Freedom and Democracy, which recently completed exhumation in the Ternopil region, will submit another request to the authorities of Ukraine. The reason was that there may be more Poles’ remains.
