Attacker “Al-Nasra” and national team of Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo became the first soccer player to reach billionaire status, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which estimated his fortune at approximately $1.4 billion.

The 40-year-old forward has been a financial success since signing a new contract with the Saudi club in June, which is reported to be worth more than $400 million. From 2002 to 2023, Ronaldo earned more than $550 million in salary alone, about $18 million a year from his contract with Nike, and more than $175 million from endorsement deals with Armani, Castrol and other brands, according to Bloomberg.

Ronaldo’s move from Manchester United to Al-Nasr in 2023 has already made him the highest-paid footballer in history, with an annual salary of around $237.5 million, excluding bonuses and a 15% stake in the Saudi club.

By comparison, Argentine striker Lionel Messi of Inter Miami earned more than $600 million in pre-tax wages during his career.

Billionaire status has put Ronaldo on a unique list of athletes that includes Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, LeBron James, Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.

Ronaldo himself said that he does not plan to end his career in the near future. His contract with Al-Nasr runs until the summer of 2027.
