The 46-year-old coach of Espanyol started in the lower leagues, coaching amateur teams and simultaneously working as a bus driver to Barcelona. Only in 2018 did he dare to leave a stable job and believed in his coaching calling.

In 2023, Gonzalez headed Espanyol B, and a year later, after the dismissal of two coaches, he became the head of the first team. He went undefeated in 12 matches and led the club to La Liga via the play-offs.
“I’m an ordinary guy,” says Manolo. “I just love football and do my job.”
Despite the new status, he remains modest and sincere: “This is not a show, but a game that we love. And even in La Liga, it’s still real.”
