When the Day of Saints Peter and Paul in 2025
Traditionally, the holiday of Peter and Paul was on July 12 in the old style. But with the transition of churches in Ukraine to the new calendar, the date has changed. Now the holiday will be celebrated on June 29 (in 2025 it will be Saturday).
This day is dedicated to two disciples of Jesus Christ: Peter, who is considered the founder of the Church, and Paul, who traveled and preached a lot. The churches of this day are celebrated.
When Peter and Paul on a new calendar
Until recently, most Orthodox churches of Ukraine celebrated it on July 12 on a Julian calendar. However, in connection with the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PCU) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) to the Nova Lalanian calendar, the date of celebration has changed.
According to the new calendar, the holiday of Peter and Paul is celebrated June 29. This change is part of the wider calendar reform that aims to unify the church holidays with the Gregorian calendar used in civilian life and most Christian churches of the world. Thus, the believers of Ukraine will now celebrate this holiday simultaneously with the Roman Catholic Church and other Orthodox churches, which have already switched to the Novoyan or Gregorian calendar.
When Petrov’s Lent of 2025 begins
Petrov Lent is a summer fast before the holiday of Peter and Paul. Every year it has different duration, because it begins a week after the Trinity, and ends on June 28.
In 2025, Easter will be April 20, the Trinity – June 8. Therefore, Petrov will last from June 9 to June 28. It’s a short fast, but it should also be followed. This is especially true for those who prepare for communion.
That cannot be done on Peter and Paul
People say that on this day it is necessary to be calm, not to quarrel and not to do hard work. Here are the main prohibitions:
- You cannot wash, sew, dig, work in the field or in the garden.
- Avoid quarrels, wickedness, image.
- They are not advised to swim in rivers or ponds. It was believed that the water “sacrifices”.
- You should not have a wedding or loud parties.
Instead, it is advisable to visit the temple, pray, remember loved ones, spend the day alone and harmony.
Signs on Peter and Paul
Many folk signs are associated with this holiday. People watched nature and made the following predictions:
- If the weather is clear – there will be a good summer and a soft winter.
- Thunder on this day – to the nuts.
- Many berries will be a snowy winter.
- The sown dill on Peter will come down well.
- If the rooster is restless – there will be news or guests.
They also believed that “how you spend the day of Peter and Paul – that will be your summer.”
