On November 15, the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv sent People’s Deputy Yevgeny Shevchenko to custody. He is suspected of treason because of the call to start “dialogue” with Russia.

Details: According to journalists, the people’s deputy will be detained until January 11.
The prosecution insisted that the deputy carried out subversive activities in favor of Russia with his statements. In particular, they referred to his publications on Telegram and YouTube.
Shevchenko himself stated at the meeting that this was “some misunderstanding.” He also expects an “intellectual discussion” and that there should be a “civilized process” in the consideration of this case.
The lawyer of the people’s deputy stated that they did not have time to “properly draw up” a written objection, because the day before “searches continued until late” and requested that the meeting be postponed to November 16.
According to the investigation, the People’s Deputy systematically disseminated Russian narratives publicly in his speeches and interviews. It was also stated that Shevchenko “posted statements on social networks aimed at harming the information security of Ukraine.”
What preceded:
- On April 20, 2021, the People’s Deputy voluntarily flew to Minsk to “get to know” Lukashenka. He also stated that more than a third of Ukrainians would like to see Lukashenka as their president.
- On May 23, when the Ryanair plane was forced to land in Belarus and the oppositionist, NEXTA founder Roman Protasevich was detained, Shevchenko praised Lukashenka on social media.
- On May 24, 2021, the Servant of the People faction decided to exclude People’s Deputy Yevgeny Shevchenko from its membership.
- At the same time, in May 2023, the head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, admitted that People’s Deputy Shevchenko conducted secret negotiations with the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Oleksandr Lukashenko, at the request of Ukrainian special services.
- Later, the Main Directorate of Intelligence stated that People’s Representative Yevgeniy Shevchenko had nothing to do with their structure.
- On November 14, 2024, Shevchenko was charged with treason.
