People’s deputy Merezhko: Zelensky is intensifying his criticism of China

In his speech at the UN General Assembly, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, intensified his criticism of China’s role in Russia’s war against Ukraine, which indicates a potential shift in Kyiv’s previously cautious approach to Beijing, according to the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, a deputy from the faction ” Servant of the people” Oleksandr Merezhko.

In a conversation with RFE/RL, Merezhko noted that Zelensky’s speech was particularly notable for the fact that he directly condemned the so-called Sino-Brazilian “peace plan.”

“He criticized the Sino-Brazilian “peace plan” rather, I think, boldly… He said that [цей план] rather, it is used in the interests of Russia, – said Merezhko, – We see on the example of the president and his office that they have become more open to criticizing China’s assistance to Russia in the war.”

During his speech, Zelenskyi also hinted at Ukraine’s concerns about Russia’s use of satellite data, possibly provided by third countries, that could be used to attack Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Although Zelensky did not directly name China during the speech, his comments followed his statement in an ABC News interview on September 24 that Russia could use Chinese satellite technology to conduct such surveillance.
These remarks reflect the evolution of the position of Kyiv, which previously sought to maintain constructive relations with China and counted on Beijing’s role in rebuilding Ukraine, despite its strategic partnership with Russia.

At the same time, MP from the opposition “European Solidarity” Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze believes that Zelensky lacked clarity in his rhetoric regarding China.

“Just yesterday we heard US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken speak openly about the unacceptability of China’s aid to Russia and evidence of such support,” she said. – “But Ukraine avoids these accusations, and our president does not make them directly.”

So far, Beijing has not officially responded to Zelenskyi’s statements.

Klympush-Tsintsadze, who heads the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on European Integration, also expressed her disappointment in the commentary to Radio Liberty that, in her opinion, Zelensky lacks directness in condemning Russian aggression.

“I believe that he should be tougher in his attitude towards the unacceptable actions of the Russian Federation. Some of the sharp corners were smoothed out and I felt a stronger tone was needed,” she said.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi in his speech at the UN General Assembly stated that if anyone in the world is looking for alternatives to any of the points of the Ukrainian Peace Formula or tries to ignore any of them, it probably “means that they themselves want to do part of that , what Putin is doing.”

“And when the Chinese-Brazilian duo tries to grow into a chorus of voices – with someone in Europe, with someone in Africa, saying something alternative to full and just peace, the question arises – what is the real interest? Everyone should understand that you will not increase your power at the expense of Ukraine. The world has already gone through colonial wars and conspiracies of great powers at the expense of smaller ones. Every country – including China, Brazil, countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East – all understand why this should be a thing of the past,” he said.

China says it is neutral in Russia’s war against Ukraine, but has been criticized for refusing to condemn Moscow over its full-scale invasion in February 2022 and for its ties to Russia.
