People’s deputy from the “Servant of the People” party and head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine’s foreign policy committee Oleksandr Merezhko nominated the newly elected US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Kyiv Independent writes about this with reference to Merezhko’s letter.
– I am convinced that Trump has made a significant contribution to the cause of world peace and can do even more in the future. Trump also laid the groundwork for the current international coalition of support of Ukraine, having demonstrated world leadership in the supply of weapons to resist Russia’s brutal and illegal war of aggression, Merezhko wrote.
In the letter, the People’s Deputy mentioned Trump’s mediation in concluding agreements between Israel and Muslim countries (UAE, Bahrain and Sudan) during his first presidential term. In a comment for the Kyiv Independent, speaking about his decision to nominate Trump for the award, Merezhko noted that he sees this as “an opportunity to draw Trump’s attention to help Ukraine stand up.”
Donald Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times, but he did not win:
- 2018 – Nominated for efforts to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula, following his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
- 2019 – nominated for the role in reaching the peace agreement between Serbia and Kosovo, as well as for the overall efforts to resolve the conflicts in the Balkans.
- 2021 – nominated for helping to reach a peace agreement between Israel and several Arab countries (“Abraham Accords”).
Winners of the Nobel Peace Prize since 2018:
- 2018 – Denis Mukwege (DR Congo) and Nadia Murad (Iraq) – for efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon in wars.
- 2019 – Abiy Ahmed Ali (Ethiopia) – for efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, in particular for the resolution of the border conflict with Eritrea.
- 2020 – World Food Program (WFP) – for fighting hunger and contributing to peace in conflict-affected areas.
- 2021 – Maria Ressa (Philippines) and Dmytro Muratov (Russia) – for efforts to preserve freedom of speech.
- 2022 – Ales Bilyatskyi (Belarus), “Memorial” (Russia) and “Center for Civil Liberties” (Ukraine) – for work in the field of human rights and democracy.
- 2023 – Narges Mohammadi (Iran) – for the fight against repression of women in Iran and protection of human rights.
- 2024 – Nihon Hidankyo organization (Japan) – for helping victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
- On November 10, the counting of votes in the presidential elections in the United States was completely completed in Arizona and other “wavering” states. The victory in Arizona gave Donald Trump 11 electoral votes, bringing his total to 312, while Harris had 226. The inauguration of the new president is scheduled for Monday, January 20, 2025.
- On November 7, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, had a telephone conversation with Donald Trump, congratulating him on his “convincing and historic victory in the US presidential elections.” In his post on the X social network, Zelensky noted that this victory was the result of Trump’s “impressive election campaign.”
