There are 340 political parties in Ukraine today, and the peaks of their registration have historically coincided with elections and changes in power, and the absolute record was set in 2015 – 73 new parties.
At the same time, the state actively “purifies” the political space. Dozens of parties have been eliminated due to many years of non -participation in elections. After a full -scale invasion, this process has gained a new dimension, so 21 political force was prohibited for national security reasons.
Despite the formal existence of hundreds of parties, real political competition is currently limited, indicating the strengthening of the regulatory role of the state in the formation of a political landscape.
The lawyer notes that this transformation poses new challenges to finding a balance between protecting statehood and restricting political freedoms.
