Autumn is the season of persimmons. As you know, it is not only tasty, but also very useful for health. Let’s talk about its most popular variety.
Persimmon, known as cennet meryvesi, or “heavenly fruit” in Turkish, looks like a tomato, but has an orange color. It has been cultivated for thousands of years because of their tasty and healthy fruits, as well as their bright appearance. There are hundreds of persimmon species. You can eat them fresh, dried or boiled. Persimmons are also widely used around the world in jellies, drinks, desserts and curry spices. It is not only delicious, but also rich in nutrients that can benefit health in several ways. One of the most popular types of persimmons in Ukraine is Sharon, a so-called hybrid variety.
The Sharon variety was created to meet market demand for ready-to-eat persimmons, and this variety offers consumers the flexibility to choose between firm and soft fruit, depending on their preferences. For the first time, persimmons under this brand were bred in Israel. They were named after the Sharon Plain, also known as Hasharon, an 89-kilometer stretch of land located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Samara Hills, bordered by Nahal Tanin to the north and Tel Aviv to the south. In this region, Sharon fruits are grown in the river valley and sold domestically and exported worldwide as premium persimmons.

Persimmon and sharon: what is the difference1. A slightly different taste
The classic persimmon has a tart taste, while the sharon does not have such tartness. Sharon undergoes a process called modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), which makes them taste completely different from persimmons. The process eliminates the tartness of the fruit by exposing it to a low-oxygen, high-carbon environment. The process also promotes natural ripening, making them ready to eat the moment you buy them. Thus, the fruits of the Sharon variety will have a rich sweet taste regardless of whether they are firm or fully ripe.

2. Different form
Compared to persimmons, Sharon fruits are rounder and more squat in shape, almost like a slightly flattened tomato. Sharon fruits are small in size, averaging 5 to 8 centimeters in diameter, and have a plump, flattened appearance with a flat top and bottom and a curved, rounded center. The skin is smooth, waxy, thin, shiny and taut, covered with a fragile green to dark brown papery cup. The skin also exhibits vibrant shades of orange to dark orange with hints of red. Under the skin, the pale orange flesh is initially hard, dense, watery with a crunchy texture.
3. Sharon variety has more sugar
Charon has a little more sugar. It is felt by the pleasant sweet taste. Persimmons have such an astringent feature that not everyone likes. The sugar content there is also high, but slightly less than in Sharon.
Despite the fact that the taste of persimmons is somewhat more tart than that of Sharon, and because of this many people may not like the fruit, the sugar content is somewhat lower. Therefore, it can be argued that persimmon is more useful for health than one of its varieties – Sharon.
Despite the benefits of persimmon, there are also contraindications to its use. First of all, it is not desirable to eat it for people suffering from constipation, intestinal adhesions, who are experiencing the adhesion process of the abdominal cavity after surgery. You need to choose fruits that are quite ripe, so they improve the motility of the gastrointestinal tract, because they contain pectin and fiber, while an unripe fruit has the opposite effect. It contains a large amount of tannins and acts as a glue, digesting food particles together. Therefore, persimmon is contraindicated for people who often experience constipation or suffer from hemorrhoids. You can’t eat fruit if you are obese or have diabetes, especially if you have the second type of disease. This is due to the presence of a large amount of fruit sugars. However, you can enjoy yourself with a small amount of berries from time to time. Persimmon is also contraindicated in kidney and bladder diseases in the acute stage. It promotes frequent urination, which creates an additional burden on the body.
