Details: On the plane on the way to Brussels, Orban said that he had written a letter to Putin asking about Russia’s response to a possible EU decision to use Russian assets for a “reparation loan” to Ukraine and whether Putin would pay attention to the position of individual member states.

According to the Prime Minister of Hungary, he received an answer that Russia’s reaction “will be strong” and that it will take into account the position of individual countries on this issue.

Orbán repeated that Hungary does not support the use of Russian assets frozen in the EU, because it would be “a new level of escalation”.

He also published a separate post on his X page complaining that the EU had “deprived Hungary of its rights” and violated the principle of “loyal cooperation” in the sanctions debate, so he would “no longer consider it binding” on Hungary.

Mandiner also noted that Orbán joked that what he likes most in Brussels is “chocolate, the main square of the city, but most of all – coming back from there.”

Prehistory:

  • On December 12, the ambassadors of the European Union decided to freeze Russian assets located in Europe for an indefinite period. The Prime Minister of Hungary criticized this decision.
  • Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga, commenting on Orban’s post, called the Hungarian prime minister the most valuable frozen asset of the Russian Federation in Europe.
  • This week, EU leaders at the summit will discuss the approval of a “reparation loan” to Ukraine using Russian assets. Although a qualified majority vote is sufficient for the matter, the decision is still in question due to opposition from Belgium, which fears the legal consequences of such a move.
